Junteressli Price.
There are moments when an idea becomes a movement – and sometimes this can even give rise to a new tradition. This is what happened with the ‘Junteressli-Bryys’, which was awarded for the first time in Basel in 2024 as part of the U25 competitions. It began as an idea – to create a special, lasting prize for young riders. And what makes it so special? This unique prize bridges the gap between the world of equestrian sports and Basel Carnival.
Anyone who grows up in Basel and is caught up in Carnival fever knows the ‘Junteressli’. In the past, riders on real horses rode through the city at the head of the large carnival cliques – dignified, traditional, a sign of pride. Riding and the participation of horses in the cortège have now largely been dispensed with, but the figure of the rider has not disappeared. On the contrary: the ‘Junteressli’ remained – as an imaginatively and artistically designed carnival figure made of papier-mâché, wood, fabric, and wire. Lovingly created and carried with pride, it is still an integral part of some large cliques and a symbol of the Basel carnival, which has been officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.
This rich tradition and the special connection to the city of Basel were the inspiration and starting point for the design of the new prize. A simple medal or a small jug were out of the question – something with soul was needed, something that reflected the importance of the U25 exams and at the same time set an example for the region. It quickly became clear: it had to be the ‘Junteressli’.
Together with graphic designer Domo Löw and experienced gold and silversmith Bernhard Lang, the idea was given shape. Sketches, cardboard models, drawings, and prototypes were created. There was discussion, refinement, rejection, and further development – until finally an award was created that is as unique as its name. Lovingly handcrafted, the miniature ‘Junteressli’ will be presented at every U25 award ceremony in the future – engraved with the winner’s name as a lasting memento.
The fact that this prize has become a reality is thanks in no small part to the long-standing commitment of the Straumann family. For years, they have been passionately committed to promoting young talent in equestrian sports – both on and off the field. The ‘Junteressli-Bryys’ is an expression of this support – and at the same time a gift to Basel.
Incidentally, the original Junteressli has also found a home at our tournament in Basel: visitors can admire it standing proudly at the top of the large entrance staircase. And to the left and right of the Black Horse Club, two life-size Junteressli figures – just like the ones you see at carnival – peer curiously into the arena, almost as if they want to have their say in the sporting competition. Of course, the original Junteressli never leaves the city of Basel. As with the Golden Drum, the winners’ names are engraved on a plaque attached to the figure for eternity.
So in 2026, the Junteressli-Bryys will be presented for the third time: rooted in the past, made for the future. A trophy that not only honors sporting achievements, but also brings a piece of Basel’s identity into the modern world of equestrian sports. And who knows – maybe this idea will actually grow into a tradition, as the Golden Drum has already done.
